Mirwan Andan

Mirwan Andan is a cultural worker, part of ruangrupa, a collective based in Jakarta and  part of the artistic team of documenta fifteen a.k.a Lumbung I (Kassel, 2022). In Makassar, he co-initiated and co-founded  RIWANUA, Musyawarah Arsip, and Koneksi Tamalanrea as platforms  for art and cultural advancement in the eastern part of Indonesia and beyond.

He went to Islamic boarding school for six years in Watampone and Makassar, then continued to study French Literature at Unhas, Makassar (1999- 2004), and graduated from Comparative Politics,  (2008-2012) and Southeast Asian Studies (2023-2026), Universitas Indonesia, Depok/Jakarta. From 2016-2018, he worked as the advisor for the General Director of Culture, Ministry of Education and Culture, Indonesia.

His book editorial works include: Imajinasi Kebudayaan: Kompilasi Pidato Kebudayaan DKJ 1998-2012 (KSI, 2013); 20Kuldesak: Networking, Rebelling, Maneuvering, Moving (Kuldesak Network, 2018); Hilmar Farid’s Perang Suara: Bahasa dan Politik Pergerakan (Komunitas Bambu, 2023).

He participated events and programs, including: Independent Creative Art Spaces Leadership Training (Paris, 2007); Enhancing Asia-Europe Meeting Visibility Through Cultural Visibility (Halong Bay, 2010); State Independence – A Global Forum in Alternative Space (Los Angeles, 2011); Berlin Meeting, Responsibility of Religions for Peace (Berlin, 2018); International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) On Demand (Washington D.C., Detroit, Pasadena, 2019). From 2019 – now, he is part  the project History-Memory-Commemoration that record specific locations in Indonesia and the Netherlands that relate to shared colonial history. In June-September 2025, his long research on Games of the New Emerging Forces (GANEFO) was exhibited under the title Alhamdulillah, Our Name is GANEFO at M HKA – Museum of Contemporary Art, Antwerp, for the The Geopolitics of Infrastructure: Contemporary Perspectives project.
